Great Blue Skimmer - Libellula vibrans (Fabricius, 1793)



Range & Habitat:

Not yet recorded from the center of the state, it should be looked for in proper habitat.



Usually found at or near wooded ponds and swamps.

Description:

Males become completely pruinose blue, with blue eyes and white faces. Younger males appear similar to females but gradually become blue.

Females have white faces and develop blue eyes. Otherwise they are quite similar to Slaty Skimmer and Bar-winged Skimmer, occasionally showing the wing markings of the latter.

State: S4S5 Apparently to demonstrably secure in New Jersey
Global: G5 Secure globally, but possibly rare in parts of its range
