Elegant Spreadwing - Lestes inaequalis (Walsh, 1862)

Assorted locations throughout the state. While it is local, it can be quite common at sites where it occurs.

Description:

A large spreadwing, one of our longest. Shows bright green coloration similar to the much smaller Emerald Spreadwing. The paraprocts extend beyond the cerci.


Females are quite similar to the Swamp Spreadwing but can be distinguished by the color, size and shape of the ovipositor.

State: S4 Apparently secure in New Jersey
Global: G5 Secure globally, but possibly rare in parts of its range
