Carolina Saddlebags - Tramea carolina (Linnaeus, 1763)



Range & Habitat:

Found primarily in the coastal plain but may occur throughout the state, especially in occasional eruptions.



Breeds in clear ponds, lakes and slow streams.

Description:

A large, bright red gliding dragonfly, recognizable by the large red basal patches at the base of the hindwing. If seen closely, the "forehead" is metallic violet.


The similar Red & Striped Saddlebags are rare vagrants to NJ, see the respective species accounts for differences.

State: S4S5B, SZN A secure breeder, also an irruptive vagrant
Global: G5 Secure globally, but possibly rare in parts of its range
